Kaduna: Troops Raid Bandits’ Camps, Kill Scores, Arrest Kingpin’s Wife, Others

The Kaduna State Government on Friday said security operatives have raided bandits’ hideouts in Igabi and Chikun LGAs of the state, killing scores of terrorists.

It said several arms and ammunition were recovered.
This was contained in a statement on Friday by Mr. Samuel Aruwan, Kaduna state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs.
According to him, security forces have reported to the Kaduna State Government that several bandits were eliminated, and camps destroyed, during clearance operations in Igabi and Chikun.
Aruwan further said clearance operations were conducted in Faka, Katuka, Barebari and Maguzawa general areas, spanning Chikun and Igabi LGAs. An unconfirmed number of bandits were sighted on the high ground across the Maguzawa river; they were engaged by a NAF attack helicopter, and neutralized.

He said security forces conducted clearance patrols to Katuka, about 9km from Kangon Kadi in Chikun LGA, adding that, during the operation, one fleeing bandit was apprehended, while one motorcycle, one AK-47 rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

Aruwan added that another clearance operation took place in Kangon Kadi and Barebari areas, adding that Rabi Hajiya Karime, the wife of a notorious bandit, Zubairu, was apprehended, with Malam Idris Audu, a spiritual leader to the bandit, Abdulrasheed Gambo Na Halima and Abubakar Idris Na Halima, who were suspected collaborators.
He said,”Some items used by bandits were recovered after dislodging and razing some bandit camps in Udawa general area of Chikun LGA include; motorcycles, AK-47 rifle, some AK-47 magazines, ammunition and drugs.
He said governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed satisfaction at the reports and commended the security forces for the successful operation. The governor also thanked the troops for their relentless efforts, and urged security agencies to ensure thorough investigations on the persons apprehended.

Aruwan said clearance patrols will be sustained in these and other earmarked areas.

Excitement As Kaduna Community Gets New Classes, Vocational Centre

There was excitement among residents of Hayin Malam Bello new extension in Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State as the only Public Primary School in the community got 12 additional classrooms to accommodate the  teeming population of children.

The school, with a population of 1,150 pupils, had been in bad shape until a recent state government’s intervention through the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). A publication by Daily Trust on January 22, 2020 had painted the poor state of the school with community members appealing to the state government to construct additional classrooms.

However, Chairman of the Education Committee of Hayin Malam Bello LEA Primary School, Malam Adamu Sulaiman, said the 12 classrooms have reached 75 per cent completion and when completed, will accommodate up to 2,000 pupils from the community and environs.

Sulaiman explained that apart from the classrooms, a vocational skill acquisition centre, which comprises a computer room, science laboratory, electrical maintenance workshop, welding fabrication workshop and phone repairs workshop, has been constructed within the school premises courtesy of the current Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

He said the vocational centre has been handed over to the education committee by SUBEB but the welding workshop is yet to be fixed. He appealed to the authorities to help install solar power as well as provide the centre with a generator to make it functional.

Another resident of the area, Malam Tukur Danja, described the construction of the classrooms and the vocational centre as a welcome development. He prayed for more of such developmental strides in the community due to its large population.

Unauthorized Preachers Will Be Liable To Pay Fine, May Be Imprisoned ― El-Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has warned that anyone who preaches without authorization in the state will be liable to pay a fine and may even be imprisoned.

The governor clarified that the concept of Metropolitan Authorities to administer cities and the Interfaith Preaching Regulatory Council are not new in Kaduna state but have only been streamlined to reflect current realities.

He said that Kaduna town has always had an administrator since the days of Lord Lugard, down to the post-independence era and even during military regimes after states were created.
He said that the new law that created the new Metropolitan Authorities merely expanded the concept from Kaduna city to Zaria and Kafanchan.

El-Rufai explained that the Religious Preaching Edict was first promulgated in 1984 by Air Vice Marshall Usman Mu’azu when he was the Military Governor of Kaduna state, to check preachers who incite violence.

According to the governor, what his administration merely did is to bring both the Religious Preaching Edict in line with democratic ethos by sending a bill to the House of Assembly to update the law.
The new Regulation of Preaching Law was passed in 2019 after democratic scrutiny by the Kaduna State House of Assembly and the Interfaith Preaching Regulatory Council is tasked with giving effect to the provisions of that law.

Speaking in an interview with a Kaduna-based radio station which was aired in Hausa on Wednesday night, the Governor said that the laws were duly passed and they are not in contravention of the constitution.
The governor said that the Metropolitan Authorities will exist side-by-side Local Government Councils and that their functions will be complementary and in the overall interest of Kaduna state citizens.

“The Metropolitan Authorities are newly created but  at the same time, they have been in existence before. It is new because they have  never been created in Zaria and Kafanchan towns.”
“But it has been in existence in Kaduna since its creation. It has always had an Administrator who superintends over the town since when Lugard created Kaduna, like how Abuja was created as Federal Capital.”
“Kaduna has always had an Administrator because it has never had an Emir. Even during the times of Native Authority, it had an Administrator who functioned with the traditional head, who was the Magajin Gari, down to when Sir Ahmadu Bello was premier,’’ he said.

He said the status of Kaduna continued even after the creation of states but later, it was split into four local governments.

“So, the question is, who administers Kaduna metropolis? Who bears responsibility when there is a problem in  Kaduna town?
“Who is supposed to build township roads, to ensure that drainages are functional? Water supply, refuse disposal, are they under the purview of local governments?
“There are issues like these that are not under the local governments,’’ he said.
“These are some of the things that we considered before creating the Metropolitan Authorities. Abuja is the only city in Nigeria that is being administered as a unit.

“The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory is solely responsible for the running of Abuja. I have been Minister of FCT before and I know the importance of administrating a town as a unit”.

Commenting on the Interfaith Preaching Regulatory Council, El-Rufai noted that some people have used religion to cause crises in Kaduna state, adding that “most times, it is preachers that are the worst culprits”.
“The law stipulates that before someone can start preaching, he should be very knowledgeable, has understanding and experience to preach in a manner that will bring about peaceful coexistence within the state.’’

“The council will have to certify whoever wants to preach in Kaduna state as having the requisite knowledge, temperament, experience and foresight to do so. He or she must be someone whose preaching will not incite violence in Kaduna state,’’ he said.

“The law also forbids playing a preaching audio at around 3 am in the mosque, blaring it with a high volume and  disturbing neighbours, in the name of religion.’’

“The council will also have committees at all the local government areas.  The screening of preachers will start from the local government level before he or she ultimately gets a preaching license.”

“Anyone who doesn’t follow this procedure and begins to preach without authorization, will be liable to pay a fine and may even be imprisoned,” he said.

NAFDAC To Begin Surveillance Of Drug Hawkers In Kaduna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control says preparations have been concluded to start massive surveillance on drug hawkers in Kaduna State.

Kaduna State Coordinator of the agency, Mr Nasiru Mato disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Kaduna.

Mato said that drug hawking was of major concern to NAFDAC and the state.

He said that the complete ban of drug hawking was still in force and all medicines must be kept at the appropriate temperature as prescribed by the manufacturer to achieve the desired efficacy, potency and safety.

“Drug hawking exposes the commodities to severe temperatures, high humidity and other unfriendly climatic conditions. This is unacceptable.
“Hawking of drugs compromises the ethics and standards of the sale and distribution of medicinal products. How could one be in the business of a commodity of which you do not have prerequisite knowledge?
“Drug hawking is a serious violation of drug law hence the consumers should always *purchase medicines from registered drug outlets.
“The risks associated with patronising drug hawkers are dangerous and very lethal,” he said.

Mato said NAFDAC had been up and doing to educate and sensitise the unsuspecting consumers on the inherent dangers of patronising drug hawkers.

“Drug hawkers must not be allowed to toy with the lives of the people,” he said. (NAN)

Incompetent People In Government Reason For Failure - El Rufai

The Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has said there is governance failure because there are so many incompetent people in government.

He spoke yesterday at a plenary session of the Nigerian Economic Summit.

“We need competent people in political and public service, but this is not the case in Nigeria and things will not work.

“Unless the best and brightest hands are in the political system, the outcome will be sub-optimal and terrible,” he said.

“I have seen a level of disconnect between the political and economic elite. We discovered that those in the economic class just want to do their business, make their money and live at Banana Island.

It is therefore, victory for democracy."

I Was Scolded For Returning N100,000 Forgotten B"y passenger – Kaduna Tricyclist

A tricycle operator in Kaduna, Ayuba Yusuf, who returned N100,000 forgotten by a passenger, said on Monday that the reaction of some members of the public, took him by surprise.

Yusuf, a Diploma certificate holder in Public Administration, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that although few people commended him, a lot more scolded him for being ‘foolish’ for returning such amount in this ‘time of hardship’.

Narrating how it happened, the tricycle operator said on 19th October, a lady with children flagged him at exactly 6.45pm, barely 15 minutes to the time of 7pm, when tricyclist must be off the road for the day.

“I told her it was late but she pleaded with me to help her, as she had some small children, and was probably returning from a trip.

“Out of pity, I obliged, and at great risk, after which she paid her fare and I left hurriedly to beat the 7pm closing time fixed by the state government.

“But upon reaching home, I saw a bag forgotten in my tricycle, apparently belonging to the woman, and upon opening same, saw some clothing materials, cosmetics, and money, which I decided not to touch,” he narrated.

Yusuf, aged 44, and father of four children, said he drew the attention of his wife and they both resorted to listening to the radio to hear if the owner would sponsor an announcement.

“My wife later heard an announcement on the missing bag through Liberty radio, Kaduna, and drew my attention, after which I returned the items, including the money.

“The woman was so elated that she gave me N10,000 out of the money, which I rejected, but she insisted that I should accept same.

“Some people at the station intervened by insisting that I accept the gift, which I did reluctantly by collecting only N4,000, and giving some others at the scene, N6,000 to share,” he said.

Yusuf, who took to the commercial tricycle transportation business for lack of white collar job upon graduation, explained that the tricycle he was riding belonged to some one else, and that his weekly Returns to the owner, was N15,000.

He said his greatest disappointment was that while some people lauded his sense of honesty, a lot more castigated him for, in their words, being “foolish enough to return such amount of money in this hard times”.

“I am of the belief that what is not mine, cannot be mine; unfortunately, I received calls from most people castigating me for being foolish enough to return such amount of money in this hard times.

“They were surprised that such honesty was displayed by a tricycle operator, of all people, whom they felt, ought to have capitalised on this opportunity to empower himself financially,” he added.

Also speaking to NAN, the owner of the money, Mrs Maryam Umar, said she felt relieved after collecting the bag containing the money and other items.

“ I was so happy; I never knew that such people are still abound in our society today; I commend him for his honesty; how I wish all people will always display such attitude”, she said.

OP-ED: The Untold Truth About Zangon Kataf Election, By Abrack Yankees For Jh Media Team

It will be recalled that Zangon kataf local government of kaduna state held council election last Saturday being 23rd of October 2021,after series of postpontment, the long anticipated election witnessed a low turn out of voters due to voters empathy.

The election was marred with excessive   irregularities in some of the wards due to unavailability of security personnels across the wards of the local government. Most of the PDP stronghold polling unit across the LGA witnessed zero security presence. The PDP capitalised on this error in most of their stronghold by  intimidating the APC supporters and threatening the Agents.

Secondly, the security challenges in Zaman Dabo ward, Gora ward and UNG/gaiya ward, has displaced so many commuters. Registered voters were unavailable, very few voters were accredited but the fascinating thing is that PDP recorded large number of votes in those areas, HOW? only God knows. In kachecere  polling unit  in Ungwa Gaiya ward, Election was not held due to absent of voters but large number vote was recorded in favour of the PDP. In Some polling units in Gora ward election was not held due to the malfuctioning of the EVM machine  but PDP fabricated fictitous figures. In the same vain ZANGO URBAN WARD being the strong hold of the APC was rejected, and Election was not held in KAMANTAN WARD but the returning officer defranchise over 25000 voters by declaring result of just nine (9) ward. It is a known fact that the PDP has long history of rigging election and that is exactly what they did in zangon kataf but they have failed, the mandate of the people most be given to them.

On behalf of the APC family in Zangon Kataf LGA we appreciate our supporters for coordinating themselves in a more peaceful manner at the course of the election. We call on  the Siecom Boss in person of Saratu Dikko to do justice to the outcome of the election. And by the grace of God the mandate Will given back to the people.

Insecurity: Nigerian Leaders Out Of Ideas – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, a former Kaduna lawmaker, has taken a swipe at Nigerian leaders following the recent massacre of worshippers in a mosque in Niger State.
DAILY POST recalls that about 18 worshippers were allegedly killed at Maza-Kuka in Mashegu local government council of Niger State despite the suspension of telecom services in the state to fight insecurity.
It was gathered that the armed men, in the early hours of Monday, stormed the village in large numbers and attacked the villagers, who were performing their early morning prayers.
DAILY POST learnt that the gunmen, who came on motorcycles, went straight into the Mosque and shot sporadically, resulting in the death of residents.

Sani, making reference to the recent killing in Niger, opined that those in leadership positions in Nigeria have run out of ideas to solve the lingering insecurity in some parts of the nation.
According to him, the suspension of telecom services has not stopped the killings of Nigerians.

On his Twitter page, the former lawmaker wrote: “The suspension of telecom services has not prevented the massacre of 18 worshippers in a mosque in Niger state by terrorists.
“Same with the 40 killed in Sokoto last week. Those who should provide leadership have run out of ideas.”

Kaduna Deputy Gov. Launches Hazard Risk Map

The Deputy Governor of Kaduna state, Dr Hadiza Balarabe has launched the State Hazard Risk Map that highlights areas that are vulnerable to a particular hazard in the state.

The map which was developed by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), was launched at a media dialogue organized to observe the 2021 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction held in Kaduna.

The Deputy Governor also unveiled the State Contingency Plan 2021-2015 which will aid in organizing and coordinating courses of action in dealing with natural hazards and disaster risks.

While unveiling the documents, Dr Balarabe commended SEMA for producing them because they will help the Agency to adequately prepare responses of preventing and managing disaster risks.

The Deputy Governor said the media dialogue was put together by SEMA to create an advocacy platform for collaboration between SEMA as the State Emergency Manager and the media.

“The state believes that commemorating the IDDRR usually sends a strong signal that there are still disasters around us, but we can control them by working together as a Team.
“The 2021 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction tagged #OnlyTogether#, provides an advocacy platform to highlight best practices and examples of cooperation that have impacted positively on lives of people who live in disaster-prone parts of the world, while also reducing the numbers of people affected by man-made and natural hazards,’’ she said.

The Deputy Governor praised SEMA for engaging with both state and non-state actors in carrying out its activities, adding that the successes recorded by the Agency in recent times can be hugely attributed to these collaborations.
She commended USAID and other partners for their support in disaster management, adding that ‘’Kaduna State Government is proud of the role our Traditional Institutions have continued to play for the overall development of the state.
Dr Balarabe noted the role of the media in information dissemination, knowledge sharing, and awareness creation, adding that ‘’we see the media as critical partner in disaster management. ‘’

Mob Lynches Suspected Bandits’ Informant, Wife, Son In Kaduna

A mob in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State has killed a suspected bandit informant, Abdullahi Mohammed Gobirawa.
The mob also lynched Gobirawa’s wife and son.

Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, said Gobirawa, his wife Binta Abdullahi, and his son Hassan Abdullahi, were killed on Monday afternoon.

Aruwan noted that the mob action was in response to the trio’s suspected collaboration with bandits, especially in relation to recent kidnappings in the area.
He said after killing the trio, the mob looted and burnt their home.

Receiving the reports, Governor Nasir El-Rufai expressed his sadness and deep worry at the violent actions of the citizens, and strongly condemned the extra-judicial killings.
He stressed that lawful means alone should be adopted in confronting suspicions of criminality, as the destructive practice of self-help would only result in greater harm.
The Governor directed security agencies to conduct thorough investigations into the incident and urged citizens to maintain order.
He cautioned against stereotyping of any sort and appealed for consistent recourse to the constituted agencies, adding that investigations into the incident are in progress.

Zango-Kataf LG Chairman-Elect Commend electorates, El-Rufai, SIECOM Over Council Polls

The Zango-Kataf Local Government Chairman-elect, Hon. Francis Sani Zimbo, has commended the electorates for their peaceful conduct during the just concluded council election held on Saturday October 23rd, 2021.

Zimbo, who stated this in a statement personally issued to Elanza on Monday, commended the electorate for their overwhelming support for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which ensured the victories of the party.

The statement read, ”I’m extremely grateful to God almighty for his enduring grace, my dear wife, leaders of our great party, and the good people of Zangon Kataf LGA for their trust and support without which we would not have achieved this feat today. This is a new week, a new day and a most cherished victory has been given to us to begin the day.

”My special appreciation goes to the Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency, Malam Nasir Ahmed Elrufa’i for his uncommon commitment towards strengthening the democratic process in our dear state. His insistence on electronic voting and level playing field for all parties which made our victory possible is unprecedented in the history of Local Government elections in Kaduna State and Nigeria at large. We also appreciate the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission, especially the indefatigable and upright Chair of the Commission whose commitment to fairness cannot be overemphasized.

“I dedicate this victory to the good people of Zango Kataf Local Government, particularly the victims of violent crimes across various communities in our Local Government. As Chairman, I promised to work with all stakeholders; State government, our councillors, security agencies, community and religious leaders, and you the people to restore peace in our land, and unite our people. It is a promise made, and it will be kept.

“My dear people, this victory would not have been won without the vigil you kept to cast your votes, the commitment you made to come out and vote against all odds, the peaceful atmosphere you created for both electoral officers and voters. I have never been more proud to be one of you.

“Now that the contest is over, it is time to close ranks and work together for our people. Whether you voted for me or not, you exercised your civic right and I thank you for doing that. It is time to put our differences aside and work for the growth of our Local Government.

“Let me assure you that we intend to run a government that is all-encompassing. In this regard, I extend a hand of friendship to my brother and political opponent in this contest, Hon. John Hassan who gave a good fight to the end. His ideas and wealth of experience can benefit us in our drive to make Zangon-Kataf a better place for all.

“Permit me to say to our people, especially the youth, who demonstrated unequalled commitment, passion and vigilance from the commencement of the process to this day of Celebration:

“The political process does not end on Election day. You need to stay involved in the process by continuing to pay attention to and get involved in the conversation that shapes our politics and governance. There are many more victories to be won. And with what I have seen in this election, my people are ready for more victories. In the words of the 45th American President, Donald J. Trump, “No dream is too big, no Challenge is too great, nothing we want for our future is beyond our reach.”

“God bless you all and congratulations to the great people of the great Zangon- Kataf Local Government Area.

Kaduna-Abuja Train Services Record Low Passenger Patronage Despite Resumption

Despite the return of normalcy on the Abuja-Kaduna rail line, it has been witnessing low passenger patronage, barely 24 hours after the resumption of train services by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on that route.

The low passenger turnout has been experienced on that route since resumption of rail services after the quick repairs of the damaged portion of the rail track despite the heavy deployment of security forces to ensure safety of passengers.

According to NAN, activities at the Rigasa station on Sunday indicated that in spite of the resumption of normal train services, the turnout of passengers travelling from Kaduna to Abuja was still low.

It observed that the train, with a carrying capacity of 928 passengers per trip, had barely 300 passengers on board traveling to Abuja, leaving over half of the seats empty.

The passengers who insisted that the train service still remained the safest means of transportation despite the attack a few days ago, however, urged the government to ensure that they improved security along the rail lines and its surrounding areas.

The various passengers expressed delight at the prompt intervention of the NRC which led to the quick resumption of train services especially with the upcoming festive period and has dispelled the fears of the general public.

They said that this will further reduce the heavy traffic on the highway with the increasing risk of road crashes and even attacks by criminal elements who operate on that route.

In case you missed it
Recall that on Thursday, October 21, 2021, the NRC announced the immediate suspension of rail service operations on the Abuja-Kaduna route following the alleged detonation of explosives on the train track by bandits.
This comes after an overnight attack which was reported to have occurred between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, left passengers traumatised, with witnesses reporting that the attackers also fired live rounds into driver compartments.
The NRC, however, announced the resumption of Abuja–Kaduna train services on Saturday, October 23, 2021, after the repairs on the damaged rail tracks.

Group Rejects Result, Says "Zangon Kataf Local Government Chairmanship Election Is Inconclusive"

A group under the auspices of JH Media Team in a statement signed by Lord Beckson, made available to kaduna Political Affairs, has stated that the winner of the zangon Kataf Local Government Chairmanship Election is yet to be pronounced.
The statement urged the supporters of the All Progressives Congress candidate, John Hassan and the general public to disregard any information from the camp of the Peoples Democratic Party regarding the result of the election.

The statement read, "We in the APC want to use this medium to appreciate the electorates who created time and made sure that there was a peaceful level playing ground for the elections to be conducted in zangon kataf local government, especially the APC  stakeholders, party excos, members and supporters. The manner in which you conducted yourselves made us to have the confidence and the mandate of the people which will see us taking over the leadership of the council in just few days by the time all results are compiled."

"It has come to our notice that the PDP in zango kataf local government have made some rout in the media and in our street celebrating the victory of their party in an elections where a winner was not declared and has not been declared yet."

"We want to use this medium to inform the general public to disregard any information emanating from the state main opposition party on who wins and who lost the recently conducted elections in ZANGO KATAF local government."

"So far results have been collated and computed from 9 wards out of 11 wards. Ruling party APC had nineteen thousand vote (19000) where  the PDP are leading with 28,000 vote. While we wait for the results from Zango Urban to be collated where we have gave them a huge difference of 7000 votes  against 500 votes which the PDP had. Kamantan ward will also be collated same way as zango Urban which is our strong hold where we have also scored on a big differences margin. So far, no ward was cancelled, rather it was rejected by the local government returning officer which we sense complicity. We will ensure the two wards are also added. Delineating two other wards who brought in their results without any complains from party agents is unacceptable. So far, the result has no security approval and other electoral stakeholders. I will call on all our supporters not to give in to any form of persimism and fear as we will  ensure we guard and protect the mandate you have bestowed on us."

Declaring Bandits As Terrorists Is Dangerous, Foreign Jihadists Will Join The Fight — Sheikh Ahmad Gumi

Gumi, in an statement titled, ‘Declaring Bandits As Terrorists Will Come With A Prize,’ said the moment bandits are termed terrorists, the direct foreign Jihadist movements will set in in force.

He said this may be found palatable and attractive by many teaming unemployed youths.

The statement read, “Nobody doubts that sentimentalism today overrides sensibility in our polity. For the sake of posterity, some people will have to speak out.

“The acts the bandits are committing now in NW have gradually over time become tantamount to terrorism because wherever innocent people are fatal victims it’s pure terrorism. Yet, innocence these days is relative. We agreed if their children and women are also killed, they are guilty by association or collateral damage, so also the bandits may think the same way. It’s right for vigilantes to lynch Fulanis herdsmen or anyone that looks like them by profiling but wrong for the herdsmen to ransack villages in retribution. They are pushed to believe it is an existential war and in war, ethics are thrown to the winds.

“Yet again, the only helpful part that is against bandits is that no other than them are attracted to join them in the NW because of its ethnic tinge and coloration. However, the moment they are termed Terrorist – Islamic for that matter, the direct foreign Jihadist movements will set in in force. And many teaming unemployed youths may find it palatable and attractive. Shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’ plus AK47 against a ‘secular’ immoral society where impunity reigns are the magnet for extremists and downtrodden – the majority of our youth.

“Already these deadly terrorist groups are fighting for the soul of these bandits. This will give criminality a spiritual cover and remove the stigma of discrediting them with such crimes since now they are fighting a ‘Jihad’ as they will claim. In such a situation, does the larger society -as it is- has the moral high ground to fight back? This is the most probable consequence, the price of which is not worth it. Nothing stops the kinetic actions from going on without the controversy of semantics.”

OP-ED: My Kafanchan, Our Southern Kaduna: Let's Embrace Peace For Humanity's Sake, By Femi Ayeni

I was born in Kafanchan a little more than 50years ago and have lived practically all my life there.
I had Elementary Education at Baptist (later LEA Bakin Kogi 2) Primary School. I then had classmates and friends who were Christians and Muslims, who were Idoma, Igbo, Bajju, Fulani, Yoruba, Kataf, Hausa, Edo and more, but which we never noticed. I remember we went to school together and played the truants together; potato-digging, swimming in little streams like rafin Baptist, rafin CMS, rafin tsale, rafin malaika etc. In the pack of happy-go-lucky boys and girls we had Ahmed, Dodo, Sunday, Elisha, Abubakar, Dayo, Femi, Naomi, Dije, Mary, Rukayya and others. Yes, we also went to Islamic school and Church together, in KAFANCHAN. No one ever told me I was a Christian and Saidu was a Muslim, i never heard anyone refer to Dodo as Bajju and Rukayya as Hausa or Fulani, we were one.
We grew up together and proceeded to various Secondary schools. Mine was Government Day Secondary School (now Government Girls' Secondary School), Takau, Kafanchan.I was one of the pioneer students of that school where we had a predominant Christian population of students and staff. We had Christian prayers during assembly and no one ever complained. We had a Muslim Headboy (Shuaibu Abdulahi) appointed by Christian teachers throughout our 5 years and no one complained. All female students  wore skirts or gowns above the knee and no one complained. Boys and girls sat together in class, no one complained. We were happy, no one could tell us apart based on creed or tribe. We had our social nights together and Martha visited Aisha at home while Sadiq and Elisha also exchanged visits without fear.
Later as undergraduates we partied together during the holidays when we came back from our various schools.Parties and picnics organized by groups made up of Muslim and Christian youths; "The Big Ten", led the pack back then, followed by "The Malis" and others. We all had fun together. Abdulahi was never scared of Shedrach and Ladodo was very comfortable with Abel. Mohammed dated Evelyn while Aishat and Paul were known to be lovers. We were not Christians or Muslims, neither were we Bajju nor Fulani, we were simply happy, hardworking, fun-loving Southern Kaduna Youths, yes, just young Nigerians.

Then we had religious processions without molestation or harrassment; The Catholic church had theirs, my church, Cherubim and Seraphim in our flowing white garments also had ours, sometimes as late as 2:am on Easter Eve accross the streets of Kafanchan, we marched and danced through Emir road, past the main market, Danhaya Street, Hospital road, Magajiya Street and other places unescorted by the Police and unmolested. Muslims sometimes had theirs too. All through the streets without incidence. We associated and worshipped freely, in KAFANCHAN, in Southern Kaduna because we loved and respected one another without bias to religion and tribe.
In those early years I couldn't tell Hausa and Kataf apart.

I thought Dangoma and Goska were one because there was no war. I didn't know the difference between Catholics and Pentecostal Christians because i was taught we belonged to one body of Christ. Nobody told me there was a difference between Sunni and Shiite Muslims, i saw them as brothers.

CAN and IJN were non-political. PDP and APC were not religions.
But now they are.
Things have fallen apart in our beloved homeland, in my Southern Kaduna.
But the centre may still hold if WE STOP THE KILLINGS AND STOP SPREADING HATE.
If we reason together we can #BRING BACK OUR SOUTHERN KADUNA.
#BRING BACK THE PEACE.

How Kano, Kaduna Gov’ts Use Technology To Generate Revenue

Kano and Kaduna states governments have deployed technology to generate revenues with a view to boosting their economies.
While Kano leverages on Point of Sales (POS) device to drive the initiative, Kaduna uses camera and other electronic devises to achieve the onerous task, Daily Trust reports.

Collection of taxes and levies by government agencies to boost revenue is commonly believed to be fraught with fraudulent activities by personnel.
Reports have had it that some of the tax collector corruptibly arm themselves with fake tickets which they issue to tax payers instead of government official tickets and pocket public funds. Others, too, extort money from the levy payers.

Piqued by the untoward practice, Kano and Kaduna State governments have started deploying technology to generate revenues.

In Kano, tricycle operators who are about 70,000 and operate with painted Adaidaita Sahu, now make their daily tax payments through POS device. They have expressed delight that their taxes now get to the appropriate quarters instead of private pockets.
The initiative, our correspondent gathered, was an aftermath of the protest by tricycle riders against over N100 daily levy imposed by the Kano State Roads and Traffic Agency (KAROTA).

One of the operators, Aliyu Garba, said the adoption of technology for the collection of the levy had been long overdue. He expressed readiness to pay every day because it has helped to reduce  extortion by KAROTA personnel.

“I am happy because Kano State Government has now introduced a new way of stopping KAROTA personnel from extorting money from us in the name of revenue generation,” he said.

Another operator, Abashe Musa, said: “Now, we know it is the state government that collects the money, not KAROTA officials. Everyone knows how KAROTA officials have been selling fake tickets to us,” he said.

However, Tukur Anas said the use of technology  was a waste of time and another way of extorting money from tricycle operators, especially as defaulters are heavily fined, whether or not they a genuine reason.

“We are trying to survive with the tricycle business. But government is always introducing new things to stop our business and make us unemployed.
“Most of us are youths and rely on this business to support ourselves and our families. Many of us have lost our jobs and got stranded because of the way the KAROTA personnel used to extort money from us,” he said.

Our correspondent however gathered that despite the introduction of POS,  some operators default but pay sanction of  N1,000 when apprehended.  The Managing Director of KAROTA, Baffa Babba Dan Agundi, said:

“The job of KAROTA is just to enforce the law and we are working with the State Board of Internal Revenue. Advancement of technology is a new development.

“That is why we are now using the technological device to help in reducing corruption in the process.”

Efforts to get a reaction from the Kano State Internal Revenue Service were to no avail as its spokesman said he was  not in Kano.

The Head of Public Affairs Department, Kaduna State Traffic Law Enforcement Agency (KASTLEA), Joy George Zemo, said technology had made the agency’s job to boost the state’s revenue generation profile easy.

Even though some of the technologies are not fully in use as most of them are being test run, she said communication had been made easy for the marshals using the devices.
Zemo said the state had an electronic enforcement  that uses camera to capture vehicles with valid papers which is also at a test stage.

“Apart from that, there are other enforcements carried out electronically for ticketing, booking and for receipt using hand devices at the point of enforcement to book offenders and issue receipts to them after payment,” she said.

According to her, payment is usually done through devices provided by the State Revenue Service.
There are also walking talking, another hand device, used for communication by the marshals with their colleagues in other zones at the point of enforcement.
Zemo added that there was also mobile radio installed in their operational vehicles to make communication with other zones easy.
She also explained that testing and inspection centres were provided in Kawo and Kakuri areas of the metropolis even though they had not been fully launched but they are being used to test emissions from vehicles determine whether the they are dangerous to the environment and public health.

“The testing and inspection centres use computers to test vehicle alignment and brakes, lowness and highness of light, including the tyres.
“After the testing, a result is printed out of the computer to determine the fine for the vehicle that failed the testing,” she added.

She also disclosed that there were devices that the agency had not fully put them to use, especially those that are supposed to provide full data of vehicles that violate  traffic lights.

She said the devices had boosted the state revenue generation profile. “Yes, the devices have really helped because when we started at the point of arrest, you had to go to the bank and queue to make payment.

“But now, Kaduna Revenue service has supported us with agents at the zones and you pay and receive your receipt and go your way,” she said.

Zemo said the testing centres also help to check the health conditions of the vehicles. She added that currently, communication was easier among marshals because of the effectiveness of the gadgets.

A car owner who was arrested by marshals recently for violating traffic lights told Daily Trust Saturday that she paid N10,000 as fine.

She recalled that before she paid the fine,  the marshals had to show her the devices that recorded her when she flagrantly disobeyed the traffic rule.

‘We Heard A Bang Before We Got Trapped’, Passenger Narrates Terrifying Moment On Kaduna-Abuja Train

Commuters on the Kaduna-Abuja train corridor have narrated how they were trapped in a secluded area along the Kaduna-Abuja rail track for over six hours on Wednesday
The incident happened after the 6pm train came to a stand still.
Daily Trust gathered that the train, which was the last for the day, was eventually dragged to the Rigasa train station around 2am when a new locomotive was transported from Idu train Station in Abuja to rescue stranded commuters.

Former NUJ Chairman in Kaduna, Garba Mohammed, who was on the train, said there was pandemonium as commuters were left at the mercy of few Police officers about 40 klillometers to Rigasa station.
He said all was well when the train took off from Abuja but two sub-station to its final destination at Rigasa, there was a bang and the train gradually halted.

“The lights went off, the AC’s stopped working and we were locked up in the coaches. There was no network, there was no water to drink, people resorted to drinking water from the toilet taps and the toilets became unusable,” he said.
“40 killometers to Kaduna, we heard a loud sound and security agents asked us to take cover. A few minutes later, the security agents were moving around. We had to open the windows because of the heat and we could see the main road from the track where the train had stopped.”

He explained that there had been security reinforcement from the military who four hours later escorted them to Rigasa train station with a new locomotive.

“The new locomotive was slow and what should have been a journey of 30 minutes took almost 2 hours. By the time we got to Rigasa station, there were a lot of people who were in panic and waiting for their loved ones.”

Asked if the train had been attacked by bandits, Mohammed said: “Some people said the train was attacked, but there was no threat to us throughout the period we were stranded, which is about four hours.”

“If someone attacks a train and makes it stop for about four hours, then they have enough time to trace the location of the train and attack it, we were at the mercy of a few security officers before the reinforcement came but we were not attacked,” he said.

Another Commuter, Josephine Isiaku, explained that for four hours that they were stranded in an unknown location, train crew and security agents did not explain the situation to commuters adding that, “we were left to our own fears and speculations.”

According to former Senator Representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, the Abuja-Kaduna train had been attacked by bandits who planted explosives that damaged the rail track and shattered the windshield of the train engine.
Shehu Sani wrote on his Facebook page that the bandits had opened fire, targeting the driver and the tank. “It happened between Dutse and Rijana stations. The Driver struggled to move towards Kaduna Rigasa station,” he said.

The former legislator who said he boarded the early morning train of Thursday added that the train had run over another explosive that damaged the railings adding that the train nearly skid-off its path but “miraculously escaped.” He called on the government to suspend all Kaduna- Abuja train operations until this issue is addressed.

Security agents are yet to react as to whether bandits had planted explosives on the rail track as Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Jalige did not answer calls to his phone. Daily Trust however reports that a senior security source had recently insinuated that security agents in Kaduna had scuttled an attempt by bandits who tried to plant explosives around certain bridges in the state.

Outcry In Kaduna Over Suspension Of Firewood, Charcoal For Cooking

Kaduna residents on Friday reacted to the suspension of felling of trees for timber, firewood, charcoal.
They said already, the price of gas for cooking has risen beyond every household’s pocket, while the only alternative; firewood and charcoal meant for the low income earners, and unemployed members of the society were suspended by the state government.

Recall that the state government on September 24, 2021, announced the suspension of felling of trees for timber, firewood, charcoal for commercial purposes across seven Local Governments; Birnin Gwari, Igabi, Chikun, Giwa, Kachia, Kauru, Kajuru.

Since the suspension, prices of gas and kerosene used for cooking have increased. Consequently, many residents in the state prefer buying bread and in most cases, others go to nearby restaurants to satisfy themselves.

According to residents in Kajuru, Mararaba, Igabi and Birnin Gwari Local Governments area of the state, it was a difficult time for them in the state.

In Kajuru, Mallam Mohammed Garba expressed displeasure over the suspension of felling of trees. He said, whichever reason, the government gave for its action, the lives of residents is above everything.
“What we are passing through in Kaduna today is becoming unbearable. This is a state where there are no jobs, even labourer work doesn’t exist. Kidnapping everyday. Even if you have a farm, you hardly go for fear of kidnappers. You go to market, prices keep increasing everyday. Many people cannot afford to buy foodstuff any longer. Even if you buy, no fire, no firewood, no charcoal. You can’t even ask of gas because it’s above middle level men in the state.”

Also speaking to DAILY POST in Igabi Local Government Area of the state on Friday, Hajia Bilkisu Umar who was not comfortable with the happening in the state, noted that, there must be a secret agenda for the suspension of felling of trees, no genuine reason for the suspension of felling apart from keeping people in perpetual hunger.
“The only motive for the long suspension of felling of trees is because, the government wants people to pass through serious hunger, poverty, and be subjected to slavery,” She said.

She further noted that, once one is hungry, he/she hardly have a say in the society. Whatever comes, whatever laws imposed, he/she accepts because his right has been taken away, using demonic laws, that dare him to hunger to deprive him of his right.

Alhaji Umar who said he has lived in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of the state for closed to 34 years, said whoever deprives someone of his legitimate means to survive in this present hardship, has a plan to eliminate him.
“Nobody is comfortable in the state as I am talking with you. Majority, (if not all) are finding it difficult to eat because the means is no longer there. If you are fortunate, and a friend gives you rice or beans, wood, charcoal is another obstacle because you have a government that wants to protect you from bandits. Since the suspension, has bandits stopped?,” he asked tearfully.
