OPINION: Kaduna marathon, another misplaced priority, By Steven Kefas

The Nasir El-Rufai led Kaduna state government is the most insensitive government I have seen in decades. Even successive military governors were never so insensitive and reckless.

A government that would rather chase shadows than address real issues confronting it's citizens is a huge disappointment to say the least.

A typical example is the scheduled Kaduna marathon. It shows government's insensitivity cum carelessness. At a time when people are still mourning their loved ones the government failed to protect from bandits, the government is occupied with a jamboree called marathon.

Even the worse dictatorship sometimes feign compassion as a way of assuring the people of shared humanity when things are bad.

It is rather unfortunate that at a time when over a dozen ABU students are in kidnappers den with their fates still unknown, the state government is busy on the media talking about a marathon.

Marathons are actually not bad but should be the least priority for a state ravaged by insecurity of different kinds and shape.

The recent attack of trainees at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry Jaji by bandits, is another indication that no where is safe in Kaduna state.

The way and manner bandits stage blockades on the dreaded Kaduna-Abuja express way in broad daylight is another pointer to the fact that the bandits are now a government unto themselves.

Unfortunately, the state government is more concerned about a marathon that will add no value to the security and "economic" situation in the state instead state resources will be expended on frivolities.

I cannot imagine a Governor Babagana Zullum organizing a marathon at a time his citizens could no longer travel, go to their farms or sleep in their houses with their eyes closed.

From Birnin Gwari, Igabi, Giwa, Chikun, Kajuru, Zangon Kataf, Jema'a, Kaura and Kauru the story remains the same of blood, tears and sorrow, yet the actions and inaction of the state government only show insensitivity and carelessness.
